When you write a mystery, how do you deconstruct a crime, give the reader clues throughout the book, without giving away too much too early?  How do you pace it?

I set it up so the audience gets clues and information as Shane does.  So, as the audience, you’re gonna go along with him, seeing what he sees, listening to his hunches, but his hunches aren’t always right. I want to keep the audience interested throughout the book, without giving things away too early.
